“A whole different story, a whole different station.” This is the slogan that describes the new look of the Altamura station of Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, inaugurated this morning. A new canopy of approximately 33 meters extending the existing one and covering the section of platform leading to the railway underpass; renovation and technological upgrade of the station building; elimination of architectural barriers and adaptation of services to the most modern accessibility standards; level boarding to facilitate boarding and alighting from trains for people with reduced mobility; installation of information monitors, free Wi-Fi connection, LED lights, new-generation turnstiles that will also allow payment of tickets via credit card and smartphone. These are the main interventions carried out during the renovation works, which lasted just over a year, and during which the station continued to be partially accessible to users. The inauguration press conference was attended by the President of Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, Vittorio Zizza; the General Director, Stefano Di Bello; the Councilor for Public Education of the Municipality of Altamura, Lucia Diele; the Councilor for Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Puglia Region, Debora Ciliento. “With these interventions, highly anticipated by the community and by our many users from Altamura – declared the President of Ferrovie Appulo Lucane, Vittorio Zizza – we have made the Altamura station more modern, ‘green,’ and accessible according to the model already used by FAL for the renovation of other stations on the Bari – Altamura – Matera railway line. The work on the Altamura station is a further important intervention that demonstrates FAL’s commitment, in constant synergy with the Puglia Region and Local Authorities, to guarantee an increasingly efficient Local Public Transport service in line with European standards.” The General Director, Stefano Di Bello, added: “Thanks to great teamwork, here in Altamura as well we managed to respect the schedule and maintain our commitment to complete the station renovation works on time and without interruption of railway traffic. We hope to do the same for the reopening, on September 10, of the Altamura – Matera section, closed on May 5 for extraordinary maintenance works on the railway infrastructure.” “We thank FAL for this important investment in our territory and for our community – said the Councilor for Public Education of the Municipality of Altamura, Lucia Diele – The FAL station in Altamura has always been a symbolic place, bringing us closer not only to Bari, but from Bari to the rest of Italy and Europe. For us, therefore, it represents a place that makes us imagine the future, because from here young people depart for university, for work, so for us this is not just a station but a place for the future.” The Councilor for Transport and Sustainable Mobility of the Puglia Region, Debora Ciliento, concluded: “Stations are the first calling card for a city, the first thing a tourist sees when arriving by train, but they are also a reference point for the community and particularly for commuters. This is why the Region, together with transport companies, has initiated intensive planning aimed at renovating existing railway stations. Today FAL – she added – presents a modern and comfortable station in Altamura, with enhanced standards of safety, accessibility, technological equipment, and sustainability. This is one of the first completed works financed by the Region with PNC funds for one million euros. And with approximately another million euros under Ministerial Decree 332 of December 22, 2024, we have financed the ongoing design of an interchange parking facility. A station to experience, therefore, and not just a transit point.” The works were financed with 1 million euros from PNC funds, the National Plan for Complementary Investments aimed at integrating, with national resources, the interventions of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The project is part of a broader framework of interventions implemented by Ferrovie Appulo Lucane aimed at strengthening the railway infrastructure and securing stations, providing improved service to users. Furthermore, outside the station, there is a bike-sharing station as part of the collaboration project between FAL and Vaimoo.
